This has been a tradition for our club for 37 years. We plan and execute the annual fireworks celebration that is attended by more than 5000 of our citizens.
Our community has over 2000 students that are on free or reduced lunch programs in our school system. We will be utilizing one of our meetings to pack for the students on that program at Newnan High School, which will be 70 students. We will purchase the food items that will feed them 3 meals and snacks for a weekend.
Our state has a Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program that honors the highest achieving high school seniors and their most academically influential teachers. Students must have the highest score on any single SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year. Our club sponsors the program for our county. We recognize the Star Students and Star Teachers from six high schools in the community.
Each year
we sponsor two students from Elevate Coweta Students and purchase their entire
Christmas for them. These students are typically from lower income families who
cannot afford to provide Christmas for the student.
During our
second year, we honored Newnan Police Department, Newnan Fire, Coweta County
Sherriff, Coweta County Fire Rescue and Coweta County EMS/911 for going above
and beyond the call of duty.
This is our annual Interact Induction. The Board along with Rotarians celebrated the induction of Officers and Members of the Newnan High Interact Club and installed Officers of the newly formed East Coweta High Interact Club. Rotarians shared stories and worked with students to provide materials. Refreshments were provided by the club and served to students and their families who were in attendance.
Our Memorial Day Salute to the Fallen is our most visible and promoted service to the community. The Memorial Day "Salute to the Fallen" is a project where we honor those members of the armed services in our community who gave their life in defense of freedom. We place crosses around our community the week before Memorial Day to commemorate their sacrifice. Each cross provides biographical information about the service member as well as what war or conflict they died in. On the back of the cross is a QR code for more information as well as the Rotary wheel
This project provided clients of the nest to have warm weather items and keep them safe and comfortable in the winter. These clients are predominately homeless and need these items.
Each night that the temperature falls below 32 degrees, the Newnan Emergency Shelter opens up for those who have no place to sleep. Nonprofits and civic clubs volunteer for various responsibilities, In this project the Newnan Rotary club provided dinner for those staying overnight
We purchased and installed a new ice maker for the Newnan Historical Society at the Historic Train Depot event venue. The old ice maker was in very bad shape and not operating properly leading to poor quality of ice and was not going to pass health inspections.
The Rotary
Club of Newnan has always given grants during the Rotary year. This year we
awarded $10,000 in grants to non-profits serving Coweta County.
The Pathway Center Coweta PERR and Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) Day program hygiene closet allow clients access grooming and hygiene products. Over 175 clients benefit from this program. By allowing clients easy access to these products, staff are able to help clients perform their daily grooming and hygiene, which has been linked to improved mental health. Many clients do not have easy access to transportation and are on a fixed budget, so by providing hygiene products at group it alleviates stress of trying to find a way to purchase these items on their own. This grant would help to fill and sustain the closet to allow this project to continue. Volunteers would stock and organize the closet with hygiene items purchased from the funds received for this grant. Rotary volunteers will also arrange prepackaged hygiene bags to hand out to other Clients of the Coweta County Mental Health Clinic.
Each year our club awards high school scholarships to all 6 high schools (public and private) in the community. The students receive $1,000 each. Students are selected by school staff.
This project will help a local nonprofit that provides medical care for the uninsured. Many of their clients lack the resources to purchase basic toiletry items. The Rotary club will purchase, pack and distribute the items for the nonprofit to give to clients who visit their facility
Peachtree City coordinated the commitment and partnership with 7 other clubs (Barnesville, Fayetteville, Griffin, Griffin Daybreak, Lake Spivey / Clayton County, Newnan and Tryone) across our area to apply for and receive the first District Collaborative Grant.
The Tour
de Coweta cycling event is a signature fundraiser for the club that will allow
us to expand our service project base within the community. It will include a
century ride (100 miles) for the most experienced riders as well as a 30, 45
& 66 miles for riders of different abilities..
Our Rotary
Club participated with our Newnan HS Interact Club in Rotary Day on October 22
to bring awareness to Polio by holding several fundraisers that day with all proceeds to go to the Polio + Foundation. One was at
a local restaurant where we held a Pints for Polio evening. A portion of
proceeds went to Polio Plus. The interact Club held a fundraiser at Whitt's
Custard where also a portion of proceeds went to Polio. In both locations
Interactors and Rotarians shared about the clubs. In addition we held public awareness campaigns at each location to talk about Polio and the Rotary Club of Newnan
